Magnitude 5.7 earthquake jolts Bangladesh

Bangladesh on Friday, police said, with buildings damaged in many areas including Dhaka, the densely populated capital.
Tremors were felt in eastern states in neighbouring India that border Bangladesh.
City residents rushed out of their homes as buildings shook and some makeshift structures collapsed, Reuters witnesses said.
Three people were killed when the railing of a six-storey building collapsed during the earthquake, police said.
"We felt a strong jolt and buildings were shaking like trees," said Suman Rahman, a Dhaka resident. "Staircases were jammed as people rushed down. Everyone was terrified, children were crying."
The fire department reported injuries after bricks and loose cement fell from buildings that were under construction." Reuters

Bangladesh, in the morning at 10.38 am local time (GMT +6). The depth of the quake could not be determined, but is assumed to be shallow. The earthquake was felt over a large region.. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would." VD

Trump Is Concerned About Minority Persecution & Caliphate Threats In Bangladesh

 "Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard recently told Indian media during her trip to the country that Trump 2.0 is concerned about the persecution of minorities and growing caliphate threats in Bangladesh. That country’s interim authorities predictably denied that either is a problem, which prompted a State Departmentspokesman to remind them that “We’re watching.” This back-and-forth shows that the future of their ties is no longer as clear-cut as before.
Tulsi’s comments show that the US is no longer giving Bangladesh’s new rulers a blank check. They might even sanction them if the situation deteriorates.
Hasina was a heavy-handed secular leader who was overthrown by Islamist-instigated street violence and the “Arab Spring” precedent shows that such regime changes usually end badly with time.
Bangladesh has long struggled to contain radical Islamist sentiment within its society, but the new authorities no longer share their predecessors’ threat assessment of such movements, instead partnering with them to legitimize the new order that came to power after Hasina fled to India. That’s problematic from the US’ perspective and is made all the more worrying by reports that Bangladesh has since improved its ties with Pakistan, including in the military and possibly also intelligence domains too."

"Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled her palace on Monday, a source told the AFP news agency, as masses of protesters roamed the streets of Dhaka. In an address to the nation, Bangladesh's army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said Hasina had resigned and that he was forming an interim government. Jubilant looking crowds waved flags, celebrating peacefully. Some danced on top of tanks.

Hasina's son urged the country's security forces to block any takeover from her rule, while a senior advisor told AFP her resignation was a "possibility" after being questioned as to whether she would quit." CBS

"Weeks-long protests in Bangladesh led by students have descended into increasing violence amid severe economic woes and a new controversial law widely seen as unfairly rewarding supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party with lucrative government jobs.
Since early June, campus-based protests have called for a complete shutdown of the country until the new policy is repealed. A High Court ruling at the start of the summer came down in favor of a quota system which secures 30% of government jobs for family members of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. The student protesters have demanded a system based on merit.
