U.S. awaits release of another American after Fogel freed by Russia

"The White House expects another American citizen to be released just hours after President Donald Trump welcomed back Marc Fogel, a teacher freed by Moscow after spending 3 1/2 years in a prison.
Trump added that Fogel’s release was based on a “very fair” deal — he gave no details, and was an indication of Russia’s “good will in terms of the war” in Ukraine.
Fogel added that Russian President Vladimir Putin was very generous and statesmanlike in granting me a pardon.”
He also thanked Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for Trump, who traveled to Russia, met with Putin, and accompanied Fogel on his flight back to the United States.
Earlier the White House said the release of Fogel, who had been deemed wrongfully detained by the U.S. State Department, was a show of “good faith” by Russia."

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky imposed personal sanctions on several prominent individuals, including former President Petro Poroshenko and exiled opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk. The move sparked a backlash from critics, who have accused him of suppressing political rivals and establishing a dictatorship.
In a video shared on Friday by a local branch of Poroshenko’s European Solidarity party via Telegram, Borisenko, who became mayor in 2021 as the party’s candidate, accused Kiev’s leadership of “engaging in nonsense.” RT

Ecuadorian Air Force Commander Assassinated Amid Escalating Crime Crisis

"Lieutenant Colonel Porfirio Javier Cedeño, commander of Ecuador’s Air Force Special Operations Group, was assassinated on February 14, 2025, in Guayaquil. The ambush occurred near the Litoral Penitentiary, a notorious crime hotspot, as Cedeño traveled to Manta for a military ceremony. Hitmen fired over 20 shots at his vehicle, killing him instantly and
critically injuring his driver.
Cedeño, a decorated officer with over 20 years of service, led anti-narcotics operations in Durán, a key drug trafficking hub near Guayaquil. His assassination underscores
Ecuador’s spiraling violence, fueled by transnational cartels and local gangs vying for control of lucrative drug routes.
President Daniel Noboa declared an “internal armed conflict” in January 2024, targeting 22 organized crime groups labeled as terrorist organizations. This militarized crackdown initially reduced homicides by 16.5% in 2024 but failed to sustain progress. By early 2025, murders surged again, with January alone recording a 56% increase compared to the same period in 2024." RioTimes
