"Yellowstone National Park was rocked by an earthquake last night, sparking fears its supervolcano could be awakening. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) detected a magnitude 3.9 quake near Norris Geyser Basin, considered the Yellowstone Volcano, Tuesday at 8pm ET.
Seismic activity was felt in parts of Idaho, Montana and western Wyoming.
The USGS reported three aftershocks ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 3.7 in just several hours following the initial quake. The Norris Geyser Basin is located at the intersection of two faults that slip past each other, producing random earthquakes. Researchers analyzing the supervolcano's crater, or caldera, found magma inside is moving northeast and shifting the concentration of volcanic activity along with it. If the supervolcano erupted in one 'big bang,' some have suggested that the explosion could be equivalent to 875,000 megatons of TNT (million tons)." DailyMail
