"Five soldiers were wounded at Fort Stewart after the Georgia Army base’s commander reported an active shooter and placed the sprawling compound on lockdown Wednesday.
The soldiers were treated at the scene and transported to Winn Army Community Hospital, according to an update from Fort Stewart just before 1 p.m.The same post said the shooter had been apprehended and there was no “active threat to the community.”
The lockdown began at 11:04 a.m. in areas of the base including Wright and Evans Army Airfield and the Fort Stewart Schools, with officials advising those on site to remain indoors and close and lock all windows and doors.
Three on-base schools, including Kessler Elementary School, Murray Elementary School and Diamond Elementary School, have also been locked down in light of the incident, Superintendent Brian Perry announced in a statement.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump has been briefed on the shooting and that they are monitoring the situation.
Fort Stewart is the largest US Army installation east of the Mississippi River, covering some 280,000 acres (437 square miles, or 93% the size of New York City) in southeast Georgia, and serving as home to the 3rd Infantry Division as well as a training area for a number of other military units."
